Units of Study

Core - Global Change

The course has a ‘core theme’ that is compulsory for both Standard Level and Higher Level students. Over the two year course at NIST, the ‘core theme’ is sub-divided into:

• Unit 1: Changing Populations
• Unit 2: Global Climate - Vulnerability and Resilience
• Unit 3: Global Resource Consumption and Security

Options- Geographic Themes

The course at NIST also covers the following ‘optional themes’: 
​

• Option B: Oceans and Coastal Margins
• Option E: Leisure, Tourism, Sport
• Option F: Food & Health
• Option G: Urban Environments

HL Only - Global interactions

Higher Level students also explore geographical issues and concepts at a deeper level with the unit, Global Interactions. This unit will be divided up and integrated at different stages of the course. The main units of study in Global Interaction are:

• Unit 4: Power, Place and Networks
• Unit 5: Human Development and Diversity
• Unit 6: Global Risk and Resilience
