Defining Development
Begin with the original AdornGeo enquiry: development is more than income. Establish economic, social, political and environmental dimensions, then compare how different indicators change the story told about a place.
Mapping the World Activity
Rebuild the spatial foundation used on the original page. Practise locating countries in Asia and Africa before interpreting development maps and regional patterns.
Measuring Development
Distinguish single indicators from composite indices. Read each measure critically: identify what is counted, the units, the data year, the spatial pattern and what the measure leaves out.
Composite Indices of Development
Compare the original four measures together rather than treating rankings as interchangeable: HDI, GII, Happy Planet Index and KOF Globalisation Index each answer a different question.
Corruption Perceptions Index
Use the CPI as the original governance measure. Check its definition and scale carefully, map contrasts, and consider why a perception-based index should not be read as a direct count of corruption.
Patterns & Trends in Development
Move from reading individual indicators to geographical explanation. Describe the global pattern with named places and data, identify exceptions, then test whether the same core–periphery pattern appears across several indices.
Roots of Development
Complete the restored sequence by explaining why uneven development persists. Connect historical relationships, trade, governance, geography and global interaction; distinguish correlation from a supported causal explanation.
